Part II Leading up to The Accident
I had just started a second job at Kentucky Fried Chicken. I was looking forward to a new challenge with more opportunities. It was a few weeks into the summer and everyone at my new job welcomed me with open arms. How did I get so lucky to be hired into this group? I was beginning to look forward to my new job. The day before we left, I was still getting ready for the trip to camp. So, during my lunch break that day I had to run home to pack. The drive up there was going to be great. Was it a sign that I had the tune "Strange Days" by the Doors ringing in my head? Was it all meant to be that this die-hard person would end up living a strange life? Having stranger’s eyes follow and will memories steal my days? My life was looking great. Kim, Jim and I were going to enjoy time with my family at the cabin.
As I left KFC around 10:00 am, it was beginning to turn cold, cloudy and gray. The date was July 20 1993. I remember this date because it was the first of a four-day weekend that I had off from both of my jobs. The day turned out to be a nice day for our drive. About four hours later, we arrived at the camp where the rest of the family was waiting for us. We got there, unpacked the jeep and swapped stories. About three hours later, Kim and I decided to go out and get something to eat. We said our goodbye and off we went towards Clarion. During our drive, we went four wheeling through cornfields. Doing donuts, kicking up mud and corn everywhere. We were having a great time. Sorry to all the farmers for destroying their fields. Before driving into the town of Clarion, we stopped just outside of town, on top of the one and only hill that over looks the whole area. Little did I know, that this would be my last time as a free independent driver able to jump out of the jeep and sit on the hood. We took the time to stop and look up at the starry night sky. It was clear and nice; I did not want it to end. We left and got to the restaurant and I had a chicken dinner. We finished eating and went to drive back to camp.
